Gothenburg or Göteborg in Swedish is located in the southwest coast of Sweden and is the second largest city in the country. It is also the largest Nordic seaport and is situated along the sea coast at the mouth of the River Gōta Ālv that runs through the city. The charming city was founded in 1621 by King Gustavus Adolphus, the then king of Sweden. Gothenburg gets its name from the Geats, the natives of Gothia. Due to its strategic location, the city became an important gateway to the western archipelago in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The city was designed to look like Amsterdam with its magnificent canals and scenic waterways. It was because of the Gōta Ālv that Gothenburg became a significant trading city, besides it was a short distance away from the neighboring countries of Copenhagen, Denmark, Norway and Oslo. Gothenburg can be accessed by air, sea, rail and bus apart from which it has a good city transport. There is mild climate all year long with a warm and pleasant summer and a cold and windy winter. There is snow fall during the months of January to March, but this does not last for long.
The Liseberg amusement park is the greatest attraction in the city, being the largest in Scandinavia. Close to Liseberg is the Universeum, which is a science discovery centre. The Southern Gothernburg Archipelago is a natural wonder and a most sought after tourist attraction. It comprises of the most exotic islands that can be arrived at by a ferry. The islands themselves consist of wonders such as the Ālvsborg Fortress, Vinga and Styrsō. In the city, the Kungsportsavenyn also known as ‘The Avenue’, which is the central boulevard, goes all the way to the old city centre, Kungsportsplatsen.
In this one kilometer stretch, you will find the Gothenburg Museum of Art, the city theatre, library and concert hall. The Gothenburg Opera lies along the banks of the river and is an important landmark of the city. The Göteborg Botanical Gardens, one of the most significant in the whole of Europe, the park Slottsskogen and the Natural History Museum are also places of tourist interest. The 18th century Gunnebo House and the several museums that include the Gothenburg Museum of Art, Rōhss Museum, Gōteborgs Konsthall, the Museum of World Culture and the Aeroseum are some of the many museums that can be visited.
The city has some great shopping centers of which the Nordstan is the second largest in the whole of Scandinavia. Gothenburg is described as a shopper’s paradise and a city of gastronomical treats. One can savor the many culinary delights in the several restaurants that are available here. Gothenburg is a thriving metropolis and certainly a traveler’s perfect getaway.
